Great crested newt surveys

Great Crested newt (GCN) are a protected European species. Survey reports and mitigation plans are required for development projects that could affect this particular protected species, as a prerequisite to obtaining planning permission. Great crested newt surveys need to show whether great crested newts are present in the area or nearby, and how they use the site. Then a mitigation plan should detail how to avoid, reduce or manage any negative effects to the protected species.

We carry out pond surveys, to determine the presence or absence of great crested newts and the population size. Great crested newt surveys should be carried out between mid-March and June. Multiple survey visits are required (a minimum of four and a maximum of six), with at least half of these visits during the period between mid-April and mid-May.
